Participation in support groups is an integral part of many addiction treatment programs to support ongoing recovery. During early recovery, clients are encouraged to attend support group meetings several times a week, or even every day. As you progress in your recovery, you may choose to attend less frequently. However, it is still important to stay active and continue going even when you’re feeling confident in your recovery because participation has many benefits including reducing risk of relapse:
- Meet new people: Recovery support groups can be a great way to meet others. You already know that these new friends will not be pressuring you to drink or use drugs because you’re all adjusting to a lifestyle of recovery. It can be nice to surround yourself with others who are in the same situation and be able to hold one another accountable.
- Connect with others who understand: Although friends and family try their best to understand what you’re going through, it can be challenging because they don’t have firsthand experience. Support group members have walked the same path you’re walking. They can provide insight, advice, and support into different challenges you face along your recovery journey.
- Feel a greater sense of accountability: As you listen to others’ stories and share you own, it can increase your sense of accountability. You want to make yourself (and others) proud and share your continued sobriety. Your ongoing success can be a source of inspiration and motivation for others just as they inspire you.
- Have a continued source of support: As you face new challenges and obstacles, you’ll always have somewhere to turn. Recovery is not something that you have to go through alone, and support groups can become another resource and tool as you grow in your recovery, tackle new obstacles, and try different things.
Establishing a routine is a healthy part of recovery. It helps you to stay focused, have things to look forward to, create structure in your day, stay active, and reduce boredom. Building time for support group meetings into your schedule holds you more accountable and provides consistency. Take the time to find a group where you feel comfortable and that fits with your needs. No two groups are exactly the same.
