A Fresh Start at a Behavioral Health & Addiction Treatment Center in Maine

/

A driving force behind the programs at Crossroads, a behavioral health and addiction treatment center in Maine since 1974, is our passion for helping women and men remember who they wanted to be. Substance use disorders can derail lives and cause people to lose sight of who they are and where they want to go. However, at Crossroads, we are dedicated to helping our clients get that fresh start they need. They will develop the tools and skills necessary to overcome behavioral health and substance use disorders. We offer gender-responsive treatment programs that help our clients find their way to greater clarity and once again have purpose and goals as they move forward and pursue recovery from substance use and mental health disorders.

Treating Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

Treatment is not one size fits all. Since men and women often face different challenges when it comes to treating substance use and mental health disorders, Crossroads offers gender-responsive treatment programs. We tailor our treatment models to women and men’s individual needs. From depression and anxiety to post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health conditions, these issues can affect substance use and the ability of clients to overcome obstacles. Part of recovery involves positive thinking, self-motivation, and confidence. These all stem from addressing mental health concerns and recognizing how they affect treatment and recovery.

Co-Occurring Treatment Programs for Women & Men

Oftentimes substance use disorders and mental health disorders go hand-in-hand. It is imperative to treat these two conditions simultaneously due to their interrelated nature, which is the basis for co-occurring treatment programs, also known as dual diagnosis, for men and women. Each affects the other, so it is essential that clients understand the impact of co-occurring disorders and how to make positive changes in their life to promote lifelong recovery. As clients progress in their recovery, they are able to develop the strategies and tools that work best for their individual situation. Dual diagnosis treatment programs combine addiction treatment, counseling, holistic therapy and other activities to facilitate more comprehensive care.

Our History

Crossroads for Women opened its doors in October of 1974. At the time, the nonprofit agency in Windham was known as a safe place for women to “dry out.” Alcoholism was treated, as drug problems were not widely addressed (or prevalent) at the time.

Over the years, Windham identified the specific needs of women in the state of Maine. They developed programs and services that address those needs. Our Children and Mothers Program (CAMP) was started in 1995 and remains the only licensed, nationally accredited program in Maine that provides on-site living arrangements and childcare services that allow pregnant women and mothers to attend counseling, support group meetings, parenting classes, and other activities.

Crossroads for Women opened its first outpatient office in Portland, ME in 1997, offering counseling and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Known later as Greater Portland Counseling Center, the office was expanded and moved to Scarborough in November of 2011. Beginning in 2011, Crossroads began treating men in Southern Maine for substance use and mental health disorders.

The Back Cove Women’s Residential program, a primary residential treatment program for women offering holistic treatment for women from all around the country in a beautiful Maine setting, opened its doors in 2014.

Simply known as Crossroads now, the agency offers addiction and mental health counseling at the outpatient level for both men and women.

Our treatment approach has grown leaps and bounds since 1974, incorporating both mental health and substance use treatment and addressing the issues that women, and now men, uniquely face using a relational model.

Why Gender-Responsive Treatment at Crossroads

woman smiling after hearing our mission at Crossroads Maine

When it comes to addiction, it is important that clients feel safe, comfortable and supported throughout recovery. Women and men experience different challenges when dealing with addiction and respond in different ways. Gender-responsive treatment allows clients to focus on the issues prevalent in their lives and address them in ways that work best for them. Whereas women often turn to drugs or alcohol to maintain a relationship or fill a void, men often use drugs or alcohol to avoid connections altogether. Gender-responsive treatment at Crossroads recognizes these differences and approaches them in ways that support each gender in their recovery.

Our Staff

The staff at Crossroads combines a wealth of knowledge, training, experience, and passion in providing exceptional care, treatment and support to individuals and their families as they pursue addiction recovery.
